The courtyard is older than the church around it — it was the ablutions patio of the Almohad mosque, kept along with the minaret when the rest was pulled down. The gate onto it stayed unfinished for centuries, and was only completed from 1887, to a deliberately Gothic-looking design by Adolfo Fernández Casanova.
