People walk along a narrow paved street toward a lit open square, passing metal crowd barriers, a Starbucks storefront and a tall multi-globe lamppost hung with a flower basket. Plaça de Sant Jaume stands where the cardo and decumanus of Roman Barcino crossed, on the site of the forum. Its present layout comes from an 1823 remodelling that cleared the parish church of Sant Jaume and adjoining houses. The Palau de la Generalitat and the Casa de la Ciutat face each other across it.
