ACCESSIONED RECORDING
Visitors Photographing the Hollywood Sign
LOS ANGELES, UNITED STATES · 14 May 2023 · TWELVE SECONDS
A group of visitors stands on a dirt clearing above a brush-covered canyon, holding up phones to photograph each other with the Hollywood Sign on the ridge behind them. The sign was built in 1923 reading HOLLYWOODLAND as an advertisement for a real estate development, and the final four letters were removed in 1949. It was designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 111 in 1973, and the current 45-foot steel letters were unveiled in 1978.
The archive does not edit, trim, or re-frame what it receives. The recording is the camera's own output; the archive's only interventions are cataloguing it and preparing a copy that will play.
