People cross the brick-paved corner of 2nd and Market Streets in the evening while a red sedan and a flatbed tow truck pass, and the pedestrian signal shifts from a red hand to a walk symbol. The neon sign of Cuba Libre Restaurant & Rum Bar, at 10 S. 2nd Street, marks the corner building. Market Street was laid out as High Street in William Penn and Thomas Holme's 1682 city plan and took its current name after the High Street Market opened in 1745. The surrounding Old City Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 5, 1972.
